You’ve seen this happening. You’re seeing your rankings are looking good, your content is good, your keywords are correct. But your graph is going down like a lead balloon.
Your strategy hasn’t changed.
More people are using search, however, a large number aren’t clicking on results. They’re finding the answer they need with top results, snippets, chatbots, map cards with phone numbers etc. This is known as zero click search, and as a marketer it’s one of the most important changes to understand.
As a digital marketing expert in Kochi I’m having this conversation with my clients and fellow marketers and honestly with myself. Let’s break it down and talk about how to navigate it.
What is zero click?
Zero click search is any search that does not result in a click. This isn’t a new fact, we’ve had featured snippets, knowledge panels and weather cards eating up our clicks for years. However, the scale of AI zero click searching has increased massively.
People are now going straight to AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to get the answer they need. On search results they’re also seeing AI summaries. According to a report by HigherVisibility, 14% of Americans were using AI for searches daily in February 2025, this has now increased to 29.2% (August 2025). Regardless of how many people this actually is in your market, it is clear there are more people finding answers than visiting your website.
Clicks are no longer our main metric.
SEO is not dead
But there has been a change. We used to ask:
“How am I going to get to page 1?”
Now we’re asking:
“How can I be the quoted, cited, and trusted source?”
It’s a completely different game. Before we were competing to be on the first page, now we’re trying to get in the answer. Marketers are calling this new SEO GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation). Whatever we’re calling it, it all means the same thing. Get your brand to be easily found by humans and machines.
How to survive
This is my framework and something that I personally do. Easy to implement!
1. Don’t obsess over clicks – Look at visibility
.
You’ll go crazy every month if your only metric is clicks. Look at:
Impressions – Are you being seen?
Branded searches – Are people searching your brand directly?
Citations – Are you being mentioned in the answers?
Conversions – Less people but converting better = a win!
Yes, you’re getting less traffic but if you’re smart you’ll increase your revenue. This is the marketer who will survive.
2. Answer based content
AI will always pull clear, concise and easy to read content. Try to:
Answer the question in the first 1-2 sentences under the heading.
Use question based subheadings.
Keep paragraphs short and definitions clear.
Use FAQs.
You’re not trying to be robotic, you’re trying to be clear so the machine and a tired human can understand your content within 5 seconds.
3. Be an authority
This is where I get super excited. Generic content can be produced in seconds by AI therefore generic content is no longer valuable. People want to know your experience.
The search industry are constantly saying credibility is key. Content that shows you’ve actually been there and done it will earn you credibility from your audience and algorithms. If you’re building your personal brand, this is your advantage! Be open with your stats, share your failures and your opinions. Add an author bio and show your face. Be a person, not a content farm.
4. Optimise for zero click
Some searches are never meant to click through. This is fine if you’re prepared for it. Particularly for local businesses.
If you’re a restaurant in Fort Kochi people may not even click through when searching ‘best seafood near me’. They’ll just see your map results, pictures, rating and call button. If your Google Business Profile is filled out and active, and you have reviews this is your conversion.
Make sure you have:
Google Business Profile – Fresh photos, posts and correct opening times.
Reviews – Collect and respond.
Schema – Product/local. This helps machines read your content.
Business consistency – Same name, address and phone number on the web.
5. Be everywhere people search
People are using so many different search engines now. YouTube, Instagram, Reddit and within AI assistants. You want to be found on all of them. This is often called search everywhere.
Short videos answering one question.
Helpful answers on communities.
Guests on podcasts and videos.
The more places your expertise is found, the more people and AI will recognise you as a trusted entity.
6. Have an owned audience
This is the safest strategy to use. If you’re not getting clicks from the platforms then you must build an owned audience. Build:
An email list with a truly valuable newsletter.
WhatsApp broadcast or community. This is powerful in India!
First party data. Know your customers.
Having an owned audience will keep your business steady when you’re getting less traffic from search.
7. Use paid media wisely
It can be tempting to just throw budget at advertising when you’re not getting organic clicks. However, if your content is not good then you’re wasting money quicker. Use paid to boost content that has credibility. Try to track the whole customer journey.
A 30 day zero click plan
Week 1 – Audit. Find the pages that have lost clicks but gained impressions. These are your zero click victims.
Week 2 – Optimise. Rewrite your top ten pages. Make the answer clear, headings easy to read and include a short FAQ.
Week 3 – Authority. Add author bios, real examples and unique insights. Update your Google Business Profile.
Week 4 – Expand. Take one piece of strong content and turn it into a short video and an email. Start tracking new metrics. Branded searches, citations and conversion rate.
Mindset
I always remind people that whenever there is a big change in search there is a new winner. Whether it was mobile, voice or social search. The people who succeeded were the ones who adapted quickly, tested honestly and continued to serve the searcher.
Zero click is not stealing your chance, it’s changing where your chance is. Now your chance is in the answer, brand memory and credibility.
A larger, more interesting and human game.
Final thoughts
Don’t panic if you’re seeing less traffic but your content is good. Don’t just jump on every new acronym. Start tracking new metrics, make your content clear, build your authority, have an owned audience and be everywhere people are asking questions.
The marketers who understand zero click will be those who have adapted to win without clicks.
